Delhi Government concedes to petition for disability reservation
Following a petition filed by APJF’s Disability Law Initiative in the Delhi High Court on behalf of Munnu Lal Mishra, a blind person, the Delhi Government recently conceded in court that it ought to have reserved one vacancy in the post of Education Officer for visually impaired persons. Consequently the Delhi Government has communicated to the UPSC to conduct recruitment from among visually disabled persons for the same. DLI had made the case before the Court that according to a Supreme Court judgment dated 8th October 2013 in Union of India vs. National Federation of the Blind, the Government was bound to make 3% reservation for disabled persons in the said post. Further, the mechanism prescribed for this by the Central Government, i.e. the maintenance of a disability reservation roster, ought to be followed, without which lapses such as the instant one would continue.
